On Ratatat's first two albums, the duo of Mike Stroud (guitar) and Evan Mast (programming/various instruments) developed a unique sound. Lodged in the sweet spot between hard rock (spiraling dual-guitar leads, crunching beats) and bedroom Electronica (squirmy synths and lots of lo-fi invention), they crafted memorable songs with soaring melodies and huge hooks. On LP3 the duo has kept its unique guitar sound and the hooks but made a few subtle changes. They rely more on live drums and percussion throughout, but more important to the feel of the record is the use of a wide range of keyboards like piano, Mellotron, Wurlitzer, and harpsichord. Thanks to this more organic approach and the laid-back nature of many of the songs themselves, LP3 strikes an interesting balance between the late-night jams perfectly suited for driving abandoned city streets they are known for, like "Mirando" and "Shempi" on one hand, and fragile ballads like "Shiller" and "Black Heroes" on the other. It makes for a slightly fuller listening experience, only slightly because past albums weren't exactly one-dimensional, but still more fleshed-out and varied. Certainly the duo has never made a track as sticky sweet and summery as "Bruleé," and Ratatat haven't used acoustic guitars before as they do on the majestic "Mi Viejo." The short tracks (the Spaghetti western-inspired "Flynn" and cute music box melody "Gipsy Threat" ) that pop up as slightly corny interludes are a nice new touch, too. In the end, though, the record isn't that big a departure. Tracks like the sharp-as-a-sword "Mirando" and "Falcon Jab" would have fit right in on either of their previous albums, and the trademark Ratatat sound overlays the entire record. Instead of changing their sound to accommodate a wider palette of sounds, they wisely chose to incorporate them into their aesthetic. It's an inspired move that will help them keep their old fans and still allow the duo to progress musically.

Personally, I much prefer Ratatat's previous album, Classics.

Daft Punk 4th Studio Album - 2008



On the 29th May, 2008, Pedestrian.tv announced a return of the funny little french robots known as Daft Punk. “The boys are in a studio in Paris at the moment and I can’t wait to listen to their new stuff!” Pedro Winter (Busy P, Daft Punk Manager and owner of Ed Banger Records) told In The Mix.

Yes, thats right, a new album by none other than DAFT PUNK. Is it just me, or does it feel like this new album will surpass Homework, Discovery and Human After ALL by far!? After the smashing success of the Alive 2007 tour it just seems like the robots are at their peek, and are going to bring something new, and hopefully amazing, to the table.

No word yet as to a release date or title but when word does reach me, i WILL let you know.

Surkin - Next Of Kin EP



The EP kicks off with 'White Night Two', an upbeat disco house track with a killer vocal and sweeping strings reminiscent of Ten City's 90's 'Devotion' – a clever balance between the old and the new, matching razor-sharp samples to uplifting vocals. It's the standout track here.

'Kid Gloves' has a more recognizably 'Ed Banger' sound and a harder-edged beat, and as such it could be easily confused for a Busy P, Feadz or Oizo single. It has a well-worked SebastiAn-esque build halfway through, but ends up a little disappointing when it doesn't drop at all.

The title track 'Next of Kin' is in a similar vein to 'White Night Two', but slows the pace to a blissed-out plod. With more than just a dash of Simian Mobile Disco's 'I Believe', it doesn't have enough of its own character to stand apart.

The EP finishes off with the Todd Edwards remix of 'Next of Kin'. Instead of the laid back march of the original, it’s much more upbeat, featuring a light, floaty midrange built from synthesized woodwind instruments. With a playful bassline and classic house beat, it is difficult not to like this track but it doesn't evoke the same kind of interest that the original tracks do.

Motor-Momy-Army - SebastiAn



Ed Banger producer SebastiAn has come up with something rather special for this new 12", which on the surface could hardly be more irritating. As the title intimates, the track does indeed sound like a motor, continually retuning, with a series of grotesque, ascending pitches, making a highly atonal, racecar-inspired racket. Sebastian really pushes it to the limit: on headphones the track prompts instant motion sickness with hard panning terrorising you towards the protracted, beatless close, which could quite easily be something on Mego. Splendid. The B-sides ('Momy' and 'Army') don't suck either, in fact they're a lot more palatable than the confrontational lead track. WARNING: SebastiAn's new EP WILL give you a migrane on hearing for the first time. It is a very acquired sound.
